The day after the White Stuff fell

Tall grasses in snowy surroundings

4th January 2026

The day after the snowfall, the sun was out and the sky was a remarkable shade of blue. The contrast with the day before was stark. Seeing the amount of snow still on the ground, and with the weather forecast saying it was likely to disappear over the following 48 hours, I grabbed my camera and out I went.

The excitement of playing in the snow was still as high as it was the day before. It amazes me just how much joy can be felt by the arrival ice crystals and frozen water vapour. Is it because it reminds you of the fun you had as a child when the snow fell, or is there something deeper at play? I have no idea. I don’t really care – I just love the sensation I feel inside me.

Once again, I stayed close to home covering no more than a mile radius. I ventured to the coastline, seeing the sea at its bluest, contrasted with the snowy white cliff tops. There were lots of people out enjoying the fresh air and the cold temperatures. The queues at the local coffee kiosk were looking healthy. I added my patronage. I’ve always had an affinity with the coast. I find it a real tonic. Watching the waves, hearing the roar of the water, watching it swirl and crash around rocks and outcrops. Feeling the salty air brush against your skin. What’s not to love?

I also meandered around a local park. It looked so peaceful under its snowy duvet and below the azure sky. I realised just how fortunate I am living where I do. It may not be glamorous or a go-to destination, but it is near the coast and has lovely spaces and some pretty buildings within it. There was no doubt about it – being out over the last couple of days has lifted the spirits. I didn’t take many photos whilst I was out. I was too absorbed in the moment. And that is how it should be. I quite liked the image at the top of this page – the grasses and the sky seemed at odds with the ground and the utilitarian building in the background. My mind likes a good juxtaposition. The small boats hidden in the shade was just something I found cute and colourful.

I’ll stop rambling now. My photos from the walk are below.
