Sunday saw me working at the Great North Run for Marathon Photos. Photographing over 50,000 runners certainly comes with a few challenges, but it is a very enjoyable experience.
The North-East weather kept me on my toes with a mix of cold, warm, windy, dry and wet weather... all in a few hours! I captured many thousands of images as wave after wave of runners tackled the final mile towards the finishing line. Some were in high spirits, others cursing the day they signed up! But they all had a drive and commitment to complete the course, to achieve their goal. I've run the race twice before and know what that feels like.
Whilst many runners will wake up the following day with aches and pains, I ended up with a very sore elbow. Who knew that photography could be so hazardous to your health! In all seriousness, I'd take that every time to be able to witness the joy and the drive of the Great North Runners at close quarters. I hope those who have checked out the run photographs enjoy them. There are many photographers spread right across the course trying to capture the achievements of as many runners as possible.
Hopefully I will be back for the 2018 run. I'd better start some elbow strengthening exercise!
